FIRST FIFTY \\ The Ninth Wave + COIN + Hunter & The Bear // Live Review

It is November, the days are getting shorter and colder and festival season seems miles away.

Luckily, the team from ‘The Great Escape‘ are here to brighten up the gloomy November nights with the launch of their festival warm up shows.

The ‘First Fifty‘ shows are being held in several East London’s musical hot spots over three days and are showcasing the first fifty acts that will be playing The Great Escape 2018.

See, the clue is in the name!

Tuesday the 21st November 2017 kicks off for me with a dose of good old rock music and poppy synth tunes, down at the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen.

The Ninth Wave

Scottish four piece ‘The Ninth Wave’ are the first to conquer the stage at Hoxton Square Bar & Grill. The band was off to the tough start of playing whilst people where the still entering the venue.

The genre spanning band released their debut EP ‘Reformation‘ in September and is now here to present their musical master pieces to the masses.

Blending 80’s new wave with pop elements and a touch of darkness is how the unique ‘The Ninth Wave’ sound is created. The Glaswegian band managed to grab the crowd’s attention with their songs ‘Heartfelt‘ and ‘Liars‘.

The clear sounds of Elina Lin’s and Haydn Park’s voices harmonise so well, every 80s synth band would be jealous. The Ninth Wave play a great live set that night, which gives an idea of how they will own The Great Escape festival in May 2018.

COIN

Next up is state side based outfit COIN. Hailing from Nashville, the Music Mecca for country music COIN don’t sound anything like that.

They surprise with solid indie pop tunes layered with the sunny vibes of synth influences. The band released their second alum ‘How Will You Know If You Never Try‘ in spring 2017 which gained them even more fans all over the world.

Tonight they are here to light up the dark London sky and get the crowd going with their infectious happy tunes. It seems unbelievable but this First Fifty set is COINs first ever UK show!

Lead vocalist Chase Lawrence is visibly amazed by the crowds participation, being word perfect on every song is something the band probably wasn’t expecting!

Their hits ‘Talk Too Much‘ and ‘Boyfriend‘ send the crowd into a frenzy with the dedicated UK fan base making sure COINs first ever London show is one to always be remembered.

Hunter & The Bear

Last year they performed live at the Unsigned Music Awards and this year they have joined The Great Escape line up.

Things couldn’t go better for Hunter & The Bear! Having released their debut album ‘Paper Heart‘ in early 2017 the band is still buzzing on stage.

The London quartet gets the crowd rocking out right from the start with ‘Who’s Gonna Hear You‘ and ‘Paper Heart‘.

‘We normally don’t play such short sets so we tried making it the best set list ever, but do you mind if we play something new?’ lead singer Will Irvine addresses the crowd.

The crowd cheered with excitement when Hunter & The Bear performed their new single ‘Skin Tight‘ which is out Friday 24th November. ‘Skin Tight‘ is a classic rock track which ties in well with ‘Hologram‘.

If Hunter & The Bear continue to deliver such greatly handcrafted rock music they will surely be one of the winners at next year’s UMAs.

The first night of The Great Escape First Fifty shows has been a massive success and got me and probably everyone else that went to one of the shows, extremely excited for the festival in 2018!

Be ahead of the crowd and get your TGE tickets now!
